OPEN HOUSE: The Germano Milono Building - new home of the Modesto Convention & Visitors Bureau

A prominent design feature of Modesto’s Germano Milono building is the pumpkin colored concrete breeze brick screens across the front and side of the building, a popular design element of buildings of the Modesto Modernism style between the 1930s and 1960s.

We’re excited to collaborate with Visit Modesto - Modesto’s Convention and Visitors Bureau to offer an open house throughout the week of MADWEEK for the public to view a very special example of Modesto or Central Valley Modernism. The Modesto Convention and Visitors Bureau has just recently renovated and relocated into the German Milono Building in downtown Modesto.

The Germano Milono Building is an attractive 1960 Modernist structure with beautiful examples of intact breeze block screens. It is one of only a few remaining buildings in downtown Modesto constructed during the cruise era and in the architectural style of that time. The building is also an example of Modesto or Central Valley Modernism, a variation from Bauhaus Modernism, an architectural style that originated in the Central Valley and was common between the 1930s and 1960s.

For further details about the architectural history and significance of the Germano Milono Building, you can review here the Historic Modesto Architectural Report recently completed by the Modesto Art Museum.

The Germano Milono Building features iconic, decorative breeze bricks across its front and side. The front screen is made entirely of Maltese pattern blocks and the side screens are sunflower design.
