Exhibit: Hazel R. Doten Button Collection*
The Hazel R. Doten Button Collection was given to the McHenry Museum in 1992.Doten was a New York fashion designer who attended a prominent New York art school. After graduation she was a satin and silk prints designer for both Long Studio and Little Studio and was also a color consultant for American Artist Color Works and Hillman Importing Company.
In the late 1930s, Hazel and her friend Constance Boulard opened a studio named Doten-Boulard Studio on 5th Avenue in one of New York City's first skyscrapers. Hazel and Doten co-wrote several books in the 1930s on fashion design sketching, including Costume Drawing and Fashion Drawing: How To Do It. Hazel was also a button collector and exhibited them in New York and other cities.
